The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” – Diogenes

Parents often ask “How can my child take so many classes and not be overwhelmed?” Kim Ellsworth, Principal of the Laveen campus, explains how Heritage uses a block schedule enabling them to offer more electives.  Scholars attend four classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and four classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  This schedule provides teachers and scholars more class time and gives the scholar the opportunity to add electives to explore more options without overloading their schedule.  Smiling, Mrs. Ellsworth adds that most scholars like the four day school week with Fridays off.  Parents like it because their children have time to finish homework and have weekend family time.

Since Heritage uses a 7th-12th grade model, transition from 8th grade to 9th is minimal as the scholars are already familiar with the schedule.  This structure also allows our scholars to participate in more sports and school functions.

For example, the arts nights will be held on December 10th and 11th at the Kroc Center.  Scholars are also encouraged to try out for the musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, to be performed next semester.  All performance dates and times can be found on the Laveen Campus Calendar.

Part of the Heritage Academy curriculum is the teaching of Latin. Latin allows scholars to learn strategies that will benefit them as they continue their education.  Since more than 50% of English words are derived in some part from Latin, scholars who study Latin have measurably higher standardized test scores in all subject matters, better language and vocabulary skills, and improved study skills.  The College Board acknowledges that taking Latin can boost verbal SAT scores.  In addition, studying the language will also expose scholars to history, art, theater, law and medicine.

Heritage believes a well-rounded scholar means being able to participate in athletics.  As members of the Canyon Athletic Association (CAA), Heritage competes with other schools in various sporting events including, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and football.

Heritage Academy Vice Principal and Athletic Director, Kyle Leybas, reports that the boys varsity basketball team is looking to make another deep run in the playoffs this year.  Last year they made it to the semi-finals and hope to make it even further this year.  Girls varsity basketball is also in full swing. He also states “our junior high softball team is looking to make a trip back to the state finals.  They have already won two games this year with scores of 23-0 and 25-1.” All game dates and times can be found on the Laveen Campus Calendar.

Open enrollment is from January 19-28, 2016.  Heritage Academy invites interested families to call the office to schedule a tour of the campus and speak with teachers, staff and scholars about Heritage’s unique curriculum and educational opportunities.  You may bring a completed application to the school located at 4275 W. Baseline Road Laveen, AZ 85339.  Go to www.HeritageAcademyAZ.com & click “Apply” to download all the necessary forms.  If you have questions, you can reach us at laveeninfo@heritageacademyaz.com or call (602) 290-8546.
