Small class size gives teachers the ability to maximize scholar involvement in lessons and encourages scholars to ask questions.  Heritage Academy, committed to high quality instruction, offers honors and dual enrollment classes for Junior High and High School.  The ability to earn college credit while taking academic classes at Heritage Academy enriches not only the academic program offered, but more importantly, the scholar.

While focused on academic growth and development of scholars, Heritage Academy also believes that scholars need to be well-rounded.  In support of this philosophy, Heritage Academy also offers a variety of athletics and arts programs.  At Heritage scholars can participate in drama, band, orchestra, choir, dance and art.

All performance times can be found on the Laveen Campus Calendar.

Marcus Ellsworth, the Drama teacher, has brought his 13 years of producing, managing and directing youth theater experience to Heritage Academy.  This spring, under his guidance, the scholars will perform the musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”  This will be the second musical put on by the scholars at Heritage.  The performances are scheduled for April 8th and 9th.  In addition, on March 4th and 5th, they will be hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner.

Gina Denny, Band and Orchestra, began playing musical instruments when she was in the third grade, starting with the alto saxophone. Over the years, she added the piano and flute to her repertoire. She studied music education for two years in college and has taught private lessons on piano and saxophone to students of all ages. She has experience in jazz and marching bands as well as symphonic and concert ensembles up through the collegiate level.

Kendra Halterman, Choir, has traveled and performed with choirs on three continents. She has also performed in high school, community and professional musicals in lead roles. She has taught private voice lessons and for the last six years has been teaching the “Let’s Play Music” program to children in the Laveen area.

Mackenzie (Mitchell) Wood, Dance, has competed with a nationally ranked competitive dance team in Bartow, Florida for eight years. She competed in various dance genres including clogging, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. She also performed at Disney’s Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas in Orlando, Florida, and has performed with the Holland America cruise line.  While earning her degree, Mackenzie toured with the performing dance company Dance Alliance for three years. She had the opportunity to tour in Canada, California, Oregon, and Russia. She has taught jazz, ballet, tap, clogging, hip-hop, and stomp to all ages. She also choreographed two main stage university musicals. She last worked as the full time in-house choreographer for the Playmill Theatre in West Yellowstone, Montana where she has had the opportunity of choreographing eleven full musicals.

Sherri Kuecker, Art, has taught art for the past 25 years in both Colorado and Arizona. She has experience in teaching art history as well as multiple art media including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printing, photography, woodworking, and textiles. Ms. Kuecker believes in using art education to help develop a well-rounded student.  Two of her scholars showed their work at the Phoenix Art Museum last year. Over 15 pieces of scholar art work were shown nationally at the National Art Education art show last year. Her hopes are to have more scholars show in both the Phoenix Art Museum show and the national show again this spring.
